Empowering Future Healthcare Leaders: AHEC’s Impact Through Student Ambassadors

At High Sierra AHEC, we’re committed to fostering the next generation of healthcare professionals. One of the ways we’re making a lasting impact is through our Student Ambassador Program. These driven individuals, like Yaire, a current ambassador and aspiring healthcare leader, are shaping the future of healthcare in Nevada.

Yaire’s journey is a testament to the power of AHEC’s programs. Yaire, a pre-med/MPH student, has received invaluable support through scholarships, job shadowing opportunities, and hands-on training. What’s even more remarkable is that Yaire has also become a mentor, teaching our Healthcare Heroes camp curriculum to younger peers, inspiring them to pursue careers in healthcare.

During a recent trip to Carson City, Yaire had the opportunity to reconnect with a significant figure from her past: Assemblymember D'Silva, her high school history teacher in 2019. This full-circle moment was a reminder of how far Yaire has come, from student to future healthcare leader, with the support of programs like AHEC paving the way. In addition to her academic and professional development, Yaire’s story was shared with Nevada’s Assembly and Senate leaders, where she highlighted how High Sierra AHEC’s initiatives have played a pivotal role in her success. Her powerful testimony exemplifies the ways in which our programs are not just preparing students for careers, but also empowering them to give back and lead.

We are proud of the work our student ambassadors like Yaire are doing and the lasting impact they are having on their communities. Through partnerships with local schools, scholarships, experiential learning, and mentorship programs, High Sierra AHEC is helping to build a diverse, skilled, and compassionate healthcare workforce that will serve Nevada’s future.
